THE GOLDEN RATIO

I've always been intrigued by the theory that the universe is ruled by numbers. That is why I chose to crop my images to the proportions of the Golden Ratio, which is a special ratio (1:1.618) of the length to the width which many artists have long believed to be the most pleasing to the eye. Many famous paintings and structures including the Mona Lisa and the Parthenon are said to have been created using these proportions. This unique ratio is also closely related to the Fibonacci numbers (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, ...) where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers. When you divide a Fibonacci number by its preceding number, the result averages out to the Golden Ratio (55/34=1.6176). Fibonacci numbers occur frequently in nature, such as the number of petals of flowers or spirals of pine cones and the shapes of shells. Petals of most flowers will add up to be one of the Fibonacci numbers.
